Social entrepreneurship refers to the use of the techniques by start up companies and other entrepreneurs to develop, fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues

Unlike our usual entrepreneurs whose aim is make profits, social entrepreneurs are either non-profits or blend for-profit goals with generating a positive "return to society" Profit making social enterprises may be set up, this is to enable the entrepreneurs raise funds for the day to day activities.
Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship defines a social entrepreneur as a passionate risk taker who applies innovative and practical solutions to benefit society through their business practice. social entrepreneurs are trying to predict, address, and creatively respond to future problems. 

Social entrepreneurship typically attempts to further broad social, cultural, and environmental goals often associated with the voluntary sector in areas such as poverty alleviation, health care and community development.
In most cases social enterprises depend on donations and contributions from the public. Some organizations such as the Skoll Foundation, created by eBay's first president, Jeff Skoll, makes capacity-building grants to social entrepreneurial organizations that already have reached a certain level of effectiveness.

Social entrepreneurs usually posses these four qualities: creativity, entrepreneurial quality, social impact of the idea, and ethical fiber. Creativity has two parts: goal-setting and problem-solving. Social entrepreneurs are creative enough to have a vision of what they want to happen and how to make that vision happen
